The Benefits of Ergonomics Training For Behavioral-Safety Teams

Why do behavioral-safety teams need ergonomics training?

Bureau of Labor statistics indicate that one-third of all work-related lost workday cases involve musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Certainly, teams in almost every workplace can benefit from additional knowledge and expertise in the fundamentals of ergonomics. Ergonomics training will equip team members to better recognize risk factors and provide the knowledge and self-confidence needed to help shape improved employee work habits for minimizing MSD risks.

Don't we need a company ergonomist to have a successful ergonomics program?

No – Evaluations of companies with successful ergonomics programs indicate that training from a knowledgeable expert and full employee involvement are keys to success. Many successful ergonomics programs are in place without the presence of a full-time ergonomist.

Can an Ergonomics program make a real difference?

Yes – OSHA's research indicates ergonomics programs effectively reduce annual MSD lost workday cases an average of 74% with similar reductions in workers' compensation costs.

Can simple changes in behaviors like improving awkward postures help reduce MSDs?

Yes – for example the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has determined that the margin of safety in handling a load can be increased 100% simply by moving the center of gravity of the load from a distance of 20" from the body to within 10".

Similarly, the margin of safety in handling loads can be increased about 40% simply by performing the task with no twist instead of a 90-degree twist.

How should we proceed in providing ergonomics training for our Behavioral Safety Teams?
